The morning sun rose over the anthill, and everyone was already awake. Ants hurried in and out, carrying seeds and leaves. The air smelled of warm earth. It was going to be a busy day. Anu stretched all six of her legs, one after the other. She was the smallest ant on the whole hill, and she didn't mind at all. "Today I'm going to find something wonderful!" she said. And then she saw it! Sitting in the middle of the path, golden and glowing in the sunshine, was a crumb. Anu's antennae stood straight up. She had never seen anything so big! It was a broken corner of a sugar biscuit, four times taller than Anu! Tiny sparkling grains covered the top. It smelled sweet and buttery and wonderful. The whole hill could eat for a week! Anu wrapped her front legs around the crumb and pulled with all her might. She braced her back legs against a pebble and pulled harder. "Come—on—" she puffed with effort.
