About this story
The town festival is a perfect day — cotton candy, game booths, colorful lanterns, Alex juggling corn dogs — until DOOONG! A deep bell rings, the golden lanterns flicker with strange purple shadows, one pops like a balloon and drips black ink, and the music warps into screeches. Something is very wrong. Jamie's brass compass spins wildly: the festival sits at the heart of the town's ley veins, the main node. Hidden behind the dunk tank, the three friends tap the vine shard against the compass — FWOOM! — and a glowing map of tunnel lines blazes into the air. The journals explain: the town was born as an echo-shield, its founders ringing a bell to create echoes against a shadow plague, every building sitting on glowing ley veins. 'You're the spark,' Lila tells them. 'The chant starts with you.' Echoes pour in like party guests — cheerleading spirits, vine-jumpers, time-keepers, twenty glowing rainbow spirits — and Theo hands them light-rope whips: 'Wall of light formation!' Above, the crowd cheers for the games, clueless about the battle below. Adventure number five: fair fight time.
- Festival — a big community celebration
- Node — the heart point where power lines meet
- Ley veins — the glowing lines of magic under the town
- Shield — something that protects
- Formation — an organized shape, like the wall of light
- Unite — to come together as one
- Spark — the small light that starts everything
- Clueless — not knowing what's really happening — like the crowd above the battle
