About this story

A kind fisherman with seven little children takes them fishing, and they hang seven beautiful fish on a rack to dry in the sun. But the next morning, six fish are perfectly dry and one is still wet. Why? The wet fish says a pile of hay blocked the sun. The hay says the cow never came to eat him. The cow says the cowboy kept her tied in the meadow. The cowboy says he was too weak to work because his mother didn't feed him. His mother says she couldn't cook because the little boy was crying all morning. And the little boy? An ant bit him — because he kept tickling and disturbing it. One question at a time, the children follow the chain all the way back to the beginning, and the fisherman gathers them with a smile and a lesson: one small action can cause big troubles for everyone.

  • Chain — a series of things, each connected to the next
  • Cause — the thing that makes something happen
  • Effect — what happens because of a cause
  • Block — to be in the way of something, like the hay blocking the sun
  • Trace — to follow something back to where it began
  • Ripple — a small wave that spreads outward, like the chain of troubles
  • Kindness — doing something nice on purpose — the chain's better cousin
  • Apologize — to say you're sorry, like the ant did
