Home Fire Escape Plan
A plan you draw together: two ways out of every room, where the family meets outside, and who calls for help. Includes a map key (door, window, smoke alarm, way out, meeting spot), and ages 8–10 add Stop-Drop-Roll and a practice log. Practising it once, calmly, is what makes it stick.

How to use this with your child
Draw the plan together — children remember the way out when they have drawn it themselves.
- Mark two ways out of every room, in case one is blocked.
- Choose one meeting place outside, and a back-up in case that one is not safe.
- Agree who calls for help and who helps the youngest child.
- Practise it once, in daylight, without rushing.
Map key
Door · Window · Smoke alarm · Way out · Meeting spot
Rules
- Get out fast; don't stop for things.
- Feel a door with the back of your hand before opening — if it's hot, use another way.
- Get low under smoke.
- Call 911 from outside. Never go back in, not even for toys or pets.
Ages 8–10 add
- Stop, Drop and Roll if your clothes catch fire.
- Write the monthly smoke-alarm test date: ______.
Practice log
Drill 1 date ______ · Time to get out ______ · Drill 2 date ______ · Time to get out ______
Goes well with: the Family Media Agreement for your child's age (5–7, 8–10, 11–13) — promises the child makes, and promises the grown-ups make back.
Print tips
- Print at 100% scale — not “fit to page”, so the sizes stay true.
- Cards print best on thicker paper; laminate them for a school bag or wallet.
- The ink-saver version is outlines only, so children can colour it in themselves.
- Keep one copy on the fridge and one where the family already looks every day.
