About this story
Deep in Willowbrook Forest, as darkness falls, a young fox named Ember creeps out of her den: 'Tonight's the night.' Her brother Bramble follows her through the ferns to a moonlit clearing, where badgers, owls, rabbits, deer, and hedgehogs are gathering around the strangest instruments he has ever seen — made of leaves, stones, shells, and reeds. Elder Shelby the tortoise welcomes them to the Forest's Secret Orchestra: Pip the woodpecker taps a drumbeat on a hollow log, crickets hum like violins, Orin the owl plucks vine-harp notes with his talons, Nutmeg the beaver slaps a rhythm on the stream, and Clover the rabbit clicks stones as she dances. Only Bramble hangs back — 'I don't know how to play anything' — until he finds the hollow log, the deep sound, and his own place in the music. A moonlit story about finding where you belong.
- Orchestra — a big group of musicians playing together
- Rhythm — a steady beat that music (and tail-slaps!) can follow
- Hollow — empty inside, like a hollow log
- Reed — a tall, thin plant that grows by the water
- Vine — a long, twisty plant stem, like the owl's harp strings
- Talon — a bird's sharp claw
- Croak — the deep voice of a frog
- Hesitate — to pause because you feel nervous
