About this story

In a school hallway, children walk past a tall, shiny door that no one has ever seen open. It stands mysterious and quiet, waiting. Aria and Ben stop to look. 'What's behind the door?' Aria asks politely. Ben steps forward and pushes with all his effort — harder and harder — but the door doesn't move at all. Then a soft voice whispers from the door: 'Say the right word.' The children start guessing. 'Open!' Ben shouts. 'Now!' Aria tries. Many words, and nothing happens. Until Aria pauses and remembers something her teacher always says: 'Polite words matter.' She looks at the door kindly and says, in a gentle voice, 'Please.' Suddenly the door begins to glow, bright warm light spreading across it — and it swings wide open onto a secret: a bright, beautiful garden where flowers bloom in rainbow colors, trees sparkle with magic, and the animals can talk. A wonder-filled story about the one word that opens what force cannot.

  • Polite — using kind, respectful words
